Breath hold Duration following Hyperventilation

Condition

Breath hold time (sec or min)

Pre-hyperventilation

30 second hyperventilation

60 second hyperventilation

After exercise

Peak Flow determination

Condition

Peak flow (L/min)

Normal

With tube inserted

1) Using class data, design a figure describing the effect of an exercise bout on the lung volume measurements (including error bars) measured experimentally in our lab. This should be labeled, titled, and called Figure 1.

2) Create a "dose reponse" curve describing the effect of hyperventilation DURATION on breath hold time. This should be presented in the form of a line graph called Figure 2. Fun a series of t-tests to determine whether hyperventilation increases breath hold time when compared to resting conditions. If this is not significant, explain any trends you see in the data.

3) Create a Figure 3 describing the duration of breath hold for pre and post-exercise conditions. Include statistical analysis to support the experimental data. If the data is not significant, describe any trends you see in the data.

4) Calculate the percent drop in the peak flow rate.

Discussion

5) What would you expect the breath hold duration of an individual who exercised briefly (~ 5minutes) then egaged in a bout of hyperventilation to be? Why do you expect these results and what experimental lab data, if any, supports your assumptions?

6) Explain any differences observed in pre-exercise and post-exercise measurements. These differences should be expalined with your knowledge of lung function and pulmonary regulation.

7) By inserting the rubber tube into the paper mouth piece, what kind of lung disorders does it imitate and why?
